Dr. Arokiaswamy Velumani
Dr. Arokiaswamy Velumani is an Indian entrepreneur and the founder of Thyrocare Technologies Ltd., one of India’s leading diagnostic and preventive care laboratories. Born on April 12, 1959, in Appanaickenpatti Pudur, near Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, he rose from humble beginnings to establish a company that revolutionized the diagnostic industry in India.
Velumani was born to a landless farmer and a housewife who reared buffaloes to
sustain the family. He completed his B.Sc. from Sri Ramakrishna Mission
Vidyalaya College of Arts and Science, Coimbatore, in 1978. He later earned a
Master of Science and a Ph.D. from the University of
Mumbai while working at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC).
After joining BARC in 1981, Velumani worked for 14 years, during which he
pursued his higher education. In 1996, he founded Thyrocare Technologies Ltd.,
focusing on thyroid testing. He introduced a franchisee model and offered
affordable testing services, expanding the company’s reach across India and
internationally. Under his leadership, Thyrocare became the largest thyroid testing
laboratory, with a network of over 1,000 outlets across India, Nepal, Bangladesh,
and the Middle East.
Velumani is known for his philanthropic efforts, particularly in the field of
education and healthcare. He believes in providing opportunities to the
underprivileged and has been involved in various initiatives to support community
development. He was married to Sumathi Velumani, who passed away in 2016.
They have two children: Anand Velumani and Amruta Velumani.
