Dr. Sanjay Balwant Kulkarni is a globally recognized urologist and a pioneer in reconstructive urology, particularly known for his expertise in treating complex urethral stricture diseases. As the Director of UroKul Hospital in Pune, he has dedicated his career to advancing surgical techniques and training the next generation of urologists.

After completing his MBBS and MS in General Surgery from B.J. Medical College, Pune, Dr. Kulkarni pursued further specialization in the United Kingdom. He earned his FRCS from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow and a Diploma in Urology from the University of London. During his time in the UK, he trained under Mr. Richard Turner-Warwick, a luminary in urethral reconstruction, which profoundly influenced his surgical approach.

In 1995, Dr. Kulkarni established the Kulkarni Reconstructive Urology Center in Pune, which has since evolved into UroKul Hospital—a 100-bed, single-specialty institution inaugurated in December 2022. Under his leadership, the center has become a global referral hub for urethral stricture cases, performing over 8,200 urethroplasties to date. Notably, Dr. Kulkarni, in collaboration with Dr. Guido Barbagli, developed the one-sided dorsal onlay buccal mucosa graft urethroplasty technique, commonly referred to as the “Kulkarni Urethroplasty,” which is featured in prominent urological textbooks like Hinman’s Atlas of Urology.

Beyond his clinical practice, Dr. Kulkarni is deeply committed to education and mentorship. He conducts monthly live surgical workshops at UroKul Hospital, attracting urologists from around the world to observe and learn advanced reconstructive techniques. His contributions to the field have been recognized with numerous accolades, including the Urology Gold Medal from the Urological Society of India and the Dr. B.C. Roy National Award.
